Okay, where were we? Counting down, getting ready, fizzing, fussing, the Art Car Boot Fair is back in physical form as well as the on-line event it has been during the two years Boris-fuelled lockdown confusion. Be sure now, for us artists this is very much a work event and certainly not a party, we might be holding drinks in our hands, there might be music and dancing and all kinds of beautiful chaos, there might even be a cake ambush or two, but this is us artists working! And yes, I once again declare my own interest (unlike those those BP share-holding Tories who never do), I am one of the invited participating artists, there to sell you art and the rest of it. I’ve said lots about the fair in the last few weeks and we will continue the countdown on these fractured pages as the 14th of May draws closer, it is one of the highlights of the London art calender, it is always exciting to be asked to take part…

And here, underneath the image of a new work, ‘We Are Legion’, by Mat Collishaw, is the official press release, here’s what Karen Ashton and her Fair people have to say about things themselves…
“The Art Car Boot Fair, famed for its exuberant, star-studded, super-friendly and art-bargain-packed one-day events, will be bringing art to the people again in a much anticipated return to live events in mid-May. With the celebratory theme Live & Electric visitors are invited to charge their batteries and sharpen their elbows for a frantically fun afternoon of art buying, portrait-making, live painting, muse chasing, art mingling and a whole host of interplays with an invited line-up of over 120 extraordinary artists.
A centrepiece of the 2022 Art Car Boor Fair is the stunning new work ‘We Are Legion’ by Mat Collishaw, a key figure in the important generation of British artists who emerged from Goldsmith’s College in the late 1980s. Part of his acclaimed Burning Butterflies series, ‘We Are Legion’ features the colours of the Ukrainian flag and 100% of the proceeds from the sale will go to the CHOOSE LOVE Ukrainian Appeal. Priced at the very accessible price of just £200 means that everyone has a chance to buy a significant piece from this renowned artist and support an important cause in the process. The artist will be present at the fair from 2-3pm and a consignment of the edition will be available to buy on the day online for those that cannot make it to the fair in person.
All artists in the ACBF line-up are selected for both their stellar talent and their joie de vivre (!) and all the artists will be present. It’s the one day of the year that the artists let their hair down, make something new and sell it for shockingly low prices joining in with the ACBF ethos of art, frivolity and serious bargains. The Spring 2022 line-up includes major international talents Bob & Roberta Smith, Geraldine Swayne, Rankin, Polly Morgan, Sara Pope, Charming Baker, Jake Chapman, Mat Collishaw, Pure Evil, Susie Hamilton, Amelia Troubridge, Carrie Reichardt, Pam Hogg, Gina Birch, Bunny de Sade and many punky upstarts and sizzling new stars ….with a few surprise appearances yet to be announced. Some
of the art will even be electric powered and most artists will be plugged in to something, so visitors can expect a spectacle to boot!
As usual Royal Academicians will pitch up next to trailblazers of the Urban Art scene; London’s best known photographers will rub shoulders with the cream of the new wave of contemporary painters, irreverent ceramicists will set up next to independent art publishers. There will be plenty to do as well as buy with artist interactions such as the ever popular Rennaissance Selfies, portraitist extraordinaire Wilfred Woods, Mr Bingo, the Misfortune Teller, live printing, games, raffles and another chance to take a punt on the sell-out Secret Art Casino, plus a cool bar with acoustic, electric and spoken word performances. The Art Car Boot Fair is hosted for the third time by Kings X on the beautiful Lewis Cubitt Square in the heart of the award wining Kings X regeneration scheme. Visitors can come and go as they please and make a day of it, taking in all the fabulous independent retailers, restaurants and bars in the area or just go for a dreamy afternoon stroll along the canal”.
Meanwhile here are some of the highlights that the Boot Fair would like to point out (we’ll be making some of own selections during the countdown)
Rankin will be live in person and electric with his ‘insta’ studio so visitors can snap up a cool portrait of themselves by this modern day master of the craft.

The Dolls House is a beautiful Georgian Townhouse which has been lovingly restored and converted into a travelling Art Space by artists Sukey Sleeper and Phillip Reeves. The Dolls House will be visiting the Art Car Boot Fair Live as a pop-up gallery, showcasing guest artists who have created site-specific miniature works of art specially for the event – these works will be for sale.
Smithson Gallery are bringing a host of exclusive new originals to the live event including a series made especially for the Electric Art Car Boot Fair including original works from Nick Grindrod & Mekia Machine – two zingy, exciting and highly collectible artists who both sold out in seconds at the 2021 Art Car Boot Fair online events. Both artists have made works in response to the Electric theme.
Meanwhile, things go on on-line
The Art Car Boot Fair team spent much of the pandemic developing an innovative and exciting online event site, holding three online only events which established a new national and international audience. These events sold art to people in over 45 countries. On May 14 the Art Car Boot Fair will hold an online counterpart featuring most of the artists taking part in the live event plus artists who will be exclusively online. The works available online will be different to the works available at the live event for the duration of the live event.
The online Art Car Boot Fair will open at 11am on Saturday May 14th and run for three days through till midnight on Monday 16th. The first three hours of both the Iive event and the online event will require premium access tickets to gain first entry to snap up the most covetable art bargains and then both events become free to access.
