MONDAY MONDAY, BE MY GUEST, ART CAR BOOT FAIR, MY DOG SIGHS, NAKED RED MEN and being an artist isn’t an option….
Cultivate Evolved doesn’t open on a Monday, unless by appointment of course, if you really can’t make one of the days we are open all day then we’ll happily open for you if we’re around, one of us usually is (the space is always open from 11.30am until 6pm Thursday until Sunday). Being closed doesn’t mean Cultivate hasn’t been taking up my entire day today though, the beast of an art chute gleefully eats up every single day of my life right now. I hoped it might change once we evolved things but no no no….
So today I’m busy sorting out our next guest spaces, must say some of you have strange ideas in terms of how you would make use of a guest space for two weeks, strange is good, well it is sometimes.
If you do want to get involved then please get in touch, here’s a blog entry with a bit of information and some images from those who have been our guests so far this year..need you to be a pro-active working artist though, frankly, to use a technical term, you need to have your shit together. It really isn’t worth your while sticking your art on our walls if you haven’t got things together, no good for us, no good for you..
Being an artist is a state of mind, it isn’t a hobby, don’t misunderstand, there’s nothing wrong with painting as a hobby, I sometimes envy those who can just step in and out, those who can simply enjoy it. Being an artist isn’t something you turn on and turn off, you dont get to go on holiday, you can’t have other priorities, you can’t say well I got to go meet a girl/boy this week instead, not if you really are an artist. Being an artist is a (rewarding?) sacrifice, being a working artist is not an easy option, it isn’t really an option, some might say being an artist is a burden, an affliction. For years i tried to deny it, escape it, fight it off, I hid from the affliction in the back of tour vans filling my head with loud music and all that excess, it can’t be avoided though, my name is Sean and I am an artist/ Being an artist is what I have to do, there is no option – friends, relationships, parties, holidays, food, family, bands, football, walks in the park, social life (other than art show openings, if there’s time to go to an opening, if you can put your brush down), having a life is out of the window, I think there was a point to all this, but that’s gone out of the window as well now (there are no windows in this studio, if there a world out there? I don’t know), the point was something to do with being as artist takes serious commitment, sacrifice, desire, you have to fight for your art and the places you show your art, and really, if you can avoid it, you really should. .
With all that in mind, we invite you to come and be a guest artist at Cultivate Evolved. If you wish to know more then drop us an e.mail at firstname.lastname@example.org and in return we shall reply with information. Let me say though, It really isn’t worth your while (or ours), unless you really need to be an artist and you have you shit somewhere near together – work ethic, decent website or at least a Facebook page or some such thing that you use to make people aware of what you’re doing and where you’re doing it), we are not here to aide your hobby, this is the serious business of art.
We ‘re also looking for two new permanent artists, now that really is for those of you who drive your (ex) friends crazy with you commitment to your art , those of you who know there is no real choice , for those of you who embrace the requited work ethic and know the very easy answer to simple question that is do I buy food or paint this week?
If you want to get involved, and you are serious then get in touch.
In other news, did we mention we’re back doing the Brick Lane Art Car Boot Fair again this coming June 8th? Well we are, the Cultivate Artists will be at the excellent East London event again this year, we’ll also be going on the road with the Art Car Boot Fair this year…. More when the summer comes, stick it in your diary though, you know you’ll want to be there, always a brilliant art-filled day of frivolity, a day to escape the stress of being an artist in fact (little hint here, if you’re not taking part is what we’re doing in the winter and spring then don’t come asking when the sun is out and the big events are happening)
Here’s a few highlights from last year’s Art Car Boot Fair….
And talking of highlights, here’s a recently discovered video on the In Rust We Trust MY DOG SIGHS/LOS DAVE/M-ONE take over of Cultivate back in 2012, and a video from the very first chaotic night of Cultivate and a birds eye view of our corner back in 2011…. that was then though, things are evolving, want to be involved in the now?
