Insert (Title Here) opened last night, a whip, a Germanica Caeruleum, some brutalism and some very edible paint…

Cultivate presents Insert (Title Here) at Shipton Street Gallery, London E2, March 2020 – Insert (Title Here) opened last night, a group show that brings together six artists, mostly painters, although the plinths have been handed to self-declared “Artist, taxidermist, antiques collector and fetishist” Mia Jane Harris.

The walls are mostly about paintings, Cultivate founders Emma Harvey and Sean Worrall – that’s right, blowing our own trumpets again – are joined by the painterly colour of Yulia Robinson, a painter we’re rather excited about at the moment, Yulia is following up her Cultivate solo show from late last year with one rather delicious larger piece as well as a couple of the small pieces that featured in the recent Nothing in Square show at the same venue. That large painting really is delicious, icing-sugar-thick layers of very eatable acrylic paint that she really does use in a rather exciting rather unique way, you have to love that clean way colour is used, Yulia really comes in ot he own when her canvas is big enough for her to really let loose.

The show also features the intrigue of John Gathercole – John has featured in a number of Cultivate shows in recent times, his very painterly style has been evolving in a rather rewarding way in the last couple of years, there’s a mystery to his work, a questioning, not only in terms of the questions he asks himself but a questioning of the viewer, there’s a prolificness to his current body of work, an almost rapid evolution, an excitement.

Martin Jackson also features in the show with his rather stylish silver and gold Columbia Road flower market flavours, his rather positively imposing piece Germanica Caeruleum, described as a canvas piece that involves photographic development, acrylic paint and deteriorated gold leaf really does stand out in the corner of the gallery – hey we put on the show, we curated it, hung it, we feature in it, it opened last night, we’re rather pleased with it, you might say we should be but we’re hardly ever completely pleased with a show in the way this one and the recent second Nothing Square show have pleased us, but we can’t be blowing out own trumpets too much can we?
